Celebrating Women’s Health with MoSanté

Featuring Mrs Sonia Appasamy-Sookun, Secretary of BMPA

Women’s health is a lifelong journey. One that evolves through different stages, responsibilities and realities. For International Women’s Day 2026, MoSanté is shining a light on the benefits designed specifically to support women at every step.

In this special feature, Mrs M Sonia Appasamy-Sookun, Secretary of the Business Mauritius Provident Association (BMPA), shares how MoSanté health plan respond to the needs of women, from preventive care to maternity, chronic conditions and long‑term wellbeing.

It offers a clear look at the range of women‑focused benefits within MoSanté, helping every woman understand the care and support available to her.

Q: What makes women’s health a priority within the MoSanté health plan?

A: Women often carry multiple roles, professionally, personally and within their families. Our benefits are structured to ensure they receive comprehensive support, whether it is preventive screening, maternity care or long‑term treatment. The aim is simple: to give women peace of mind and access to quality care when they need it most.

Q: What preventive benefits are available specifically for women?

A: Preventive care is one of the strongest pillars of MoSanté and women benefit from a set of screenings designed to protect long term health while removing unnecessary barriers. These include:

  • Annual medical check ups
  • Annual pathology tests
  • Mammograms
  • Pap smears

Women are entitled to all these benefits every year. For medical check-ups and pathology tests, the first visit of the year does not require a doctor’s prescription; a prescription is only needed if they repeat the test within the same year.

For mammograms and pap smears, women may undergo these tests at any age but once they are over 40 (mammogram) or over 30 (pap smear), they may do one test per year without a prescription, making preventive screening faster and more accessible as it eliminates the doctor’s visit to obtain a prescription.

These measures ensure women can prioritise early detection without administrative hurdles.

Q: Beyond preventive care, what major womenspecific benefits does MoSanté offer?

A: MoSanté’s women‑focused benefits are structured across three layers of protection: the Merged Benefits, Inpatient Cover and the Catastrophe Cover. Together, they support women through pregnancy, childbirth and reproductive health challenges. Women benefit from:

  • Antenatal and postnatal care
  • Full coverage for deliveries (normal or caesarean), including gynaecologist and paediatrician fees
  • Maternity Cash Benefit for deliveries in public hospitals

MoSanté allows delivery‑related expenses to be covered under the Catastrophe Cover — even for normal deliveries.

This provides broader financial protection for mothers and ensures that high‑cost childbirth situations are fully supported.

Q: Are fertility and reproductive health treatments included?

A: Yes. Under the Inpatient Cover, MoSanté offers a lifetime limit for Infertility and Endometriosis treatment which is an important support for women navigating complex reproductive journeys.

Q: What about chronic conditions that disproportionately affect women?

A: Global health data shows that women live longer than men but spend significantly more years in poor health due to chronic, non‑communicable diseases. Women collectively experience about 26% more years lived with disability than men, reflecting a higher lifetime burden of long‑term conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and other chronic illnesses. MoSanté helps address this reality by covering GP and specialist check‑ups, pathology tests, prescribed medication and supportive equipment such as glucometers or BP monitors. This ensures that women receive ongoing support for conditions that often affect them more heavily over time.

Q: Are there lifestyle or wellbeing benefits tailored for women?

A: Yes. MoSanté encourages healthier living through smoking cessation and weight‑management support programmes.

These benefits recognise that wellbeing is holistic and extends beyond medical treatment.

Women deserve care that evolves with them: care that is preventive, responsive and compassionate.

MoSanté’s benefits reflect this commitment, offering protection that supports women through every chapter of life.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength of women and reaffirm our promise to stand by their health, for a lifetime.
